Movin' On Up

PUBLIC // Chicago

A lot of you are going to be out of town when you propose so where you stay is of utmost importance. Whether you're proposing there or just heading that way post-proposal, it's essential that it fit in with the rest of your plan. So, you're going to want an upgrade. Here's how to get one:

  1. Tell the hotel you're proposing. This is the most important one. Hotel staff are people too and everyone loves an engagement story. We always send an email to the concierge or general manager before we check in and often an upgrade (or at the least, a complimentary bottle of champagne) is there waiting when you arrive.
  2. Make your reservation over the phone. Never book online unless you have to. Almost all hotel room rates and upgrades are negotiable. Rates change daily and even sometimes hourly based on the market and their current occupancy. Only a person can tell you this. All hotels strive for 100% occupancy every night and often suites are the rooms left unfilled. Hotels are much more are willing to give you a better deal the closer they get to that sell out. Often the online rates aren't updated quickly enough the closer they get. So, always talk to a human instead.
  3. Check your cancellation policy and keep calling. Many hotels offer a better deal the later you book, so be smart and go ahead and book your room in advance, but be aware of your cancellation policy. Many hotels, even the most luxurious ones, give you until 6pm the day of your arrival to cancel. Call that day to see if you can get a better rate, then cancel your original reservation!
  4. Talk to the right people. Sometimes the reservations or front desk staff aren't empowered to give you an upgrade, but the concierge and general manager usually are. Don't be afraid to become acquainted with these people before your arrival. Many hotels have VIP Managers or other staffs who go through lists of upcoming guests. Figure out who these people are and you're more likely to get the room you want.
